Sighet Memorial Virtual Museum
Virtual tour of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and the Resistance, Sighet — the former political prison where Romania's intellectual and political elite were imprisoned and died under the communist regime
A web-based virtual tour of the Sighet Memorial, built around eight thematic routes through the former political prison: from the prison building itself through the establishment of communism, political repression, suppression of culture and the Church, resistance and uprisings, daily life under the regime, communism in Eastern Europe, and the Memorial to the Victims of Communism.
Each tour guides visitors through multiple rooms and spaces of the museum via 360° panoramic photography, combining exhibition fragments, historical photographs, archival documents, and contextual information drawn from individual cells. A document and image drawer provides supplementary materials for each panorama. The experience is navigable by mouse or touch, with map orientation, fullscreen mode, and bilingual RO/EN support.
The project was built to make the testimonies, memories, and historical research of those who suffered under communist repression visible and accessible — so that tragedies of this kind are not repeated.
