Wie Wohnen Wir Morgen? — IBA Wien 2022

Interactive spatial installation for the International Architecture Exhibition Vienna 2022 — a large-format map of Vienna projected onto the exhibition floor, with a beamer spotlight that physically travels across the city as visitors select neighborhoods on a touchscreen controller.

A site-specific interactive installation commissioned for Wie Wohnen Wir Morgen? (How Will We Live Tomorrow?), the progress exhibition of the Internationale Bauausstellung Wien 2022 — Vienna's major urban development showcase presenting 24 innovative social housing and neighborhood projects across the city.

A large aerial map of Vienna is printed on the exhibition floor. Visitors navigate the city via a touchscreen interface showing the same map, selecting from 24 IBA development sites. Each selection triggers a beamer spotlight that physically moves across the floor map to illuminate the chosen neighborhood — collapsing the distance between digital selection and physical space.

The system runs on a custom application designed by Ioan Cernei, using WordPress as the content management layer. Interaction data is converted into spatial coordinates via Arduino, then transmitted in DMX format — a protocol typically used for stage lighting control — repurposed here to drive the precise positioning of the projected spotlight across the floor map.
